We strongly believe that it is the duty of a responsible society to ensure that nobody is ever forced to sleep rough in the UK in the 21st century. Indeed, it is for this reason that we are members of the London Mayor’s London Delivery Board, which is a strategic partnership that has the aim of bringing an end to street homelessness in the capital by the end of 2012. Nonetheless, you may be interested in knowing more about what we do to help the homeless in the areas of the UK – namely, for the most part, London and the south – in which we operate.
First of all, we work to prevent thousands of people from actually becoming homeless in the first place. We target particular groups of people, through our street work and hostels, that we know to be at particular risk of becoming homeless, including those with severe mental health problems, very challenging behaviour or a lifelong alcohol addiction – if not a combination of these or similar issues. We accommodate such people in our complex needs housing with the aim of ensuring that they are never again forced to sleep rough or, wherever possible, prevent it from ever happening at all.
Our other work to assist the homeless includes referring homeless people to emergency shelter, where they can stay at no cost for around three weeks until they are granted an assessment or referral into longer-term accommodation. We also provide for the further recovery of the homeless in the form of health, skills and employment services.
